Life happens: you think you have everything under control and then you receive an atrociously high and unexpected bill, or your relative falls ill, or a pipe in your house breaks and soaks your amps in water. You start running to fix whatever happened, and then turn to realize you have not made any post in a week. Sounds familiar? Well, in this episode, Millicent shares her own experience to help you realize such a thing is not the end of the world or your career.
This marks 20 episodes of Success Beyond The Score! Thank you all for your support, encouragement and engagement, that is what has taken this podcast from a nice little effort to help friends find their way in the professional music world to a major resource with five starts in iTunes. I could not be happier!
Performance videos are an important part of electronic press kits, and they are also very delicate. Do your video reflect your skill and charisma? Do it show how you engage with your audience, what kind of challenges you can tackle? And a key point, are you able to top your video in every live performance you do?
It might sound a bit unfair (it probably is, given that we are musicians, not models) but, if you are a performer, you cannot escape the visual aspect of it all. You need a good image on and off the stage, and for that, you need a photographer.
Have you ever heard about the elevator pitch? It is the notion of being able to sell an idea to a producer you stumbled upon in the elevator, using only the time it takes for you both to reach the floor you are going to: about 30 seconds, probably less. Well, the music bio wants to achieve the same level of effectiveness in written form. How to achieve that? Let's hear Millicent in today's episode of Success Beyond the Score.
A press kit might sound a bit daunting, as if it was something exclusive to huge artists, or something that requires a lot of time, money and effort. That's not the case at all! It doesn't have to be a massive document or a fancy animated presentation: you make sure your kit has the essentials that your promoters and clients need, and you will see how it boosts your career and gets you new contacts.
How do you make sure you are going to forward with your music while taking care of everything else? Millicent has three tips to help you out.
You might remember episode 7 of the podcast: "Is It Time To Leave The Band And Go Solo?". In that occasion, Millicent pondered the pros and cons of taking such a step, and in the following episodes, she pointed at the main difficulties that musicians face when working in groups and how to successfully overcome them. Now, after all the considerations, the initial questions is relevant again.
